Torbole, Lake Garda
The village stands on a calcareous slope on the sides of Mount Baldo with the houses set in an amphitheatre on the bay.
Given its ventilated position and the prohibition of motorboats use, this has become an internationally-renown sailing and wind-surfing centre and represents an authentic heaven for the enthusiasts who consider this area as one of the best places to practise water sports. The famous writer Goethe defined Torbole and its incredible winds as “a marvel of nature, an enchanting place”. The most striking part of Torbole has preserved its original appearance typical of a fishing village which was created centuries ago.
The most picturesque site of Torbole is the small port with the characteristic buildings of the Old Customs (15th century) and of the Casa Beust, where artists used to meet after the Second World War. Charming sites are reminiscent of past traditions, such as the small house of “duty”, heritage of the Austro-Hungarian period, and are situated at the entrance to the small port, or the narrow central square where a plaque commemorates Goethe´s stay here.
The village of Torbole was preferred by many German painters who drew the inspiration for their works from the wild beauty of this place.

Garda Trentino…For Authentic Sports-Llovers
The force of water, wind and rock, 365 days a year.
The lake waters have beneficial effects on the climate, which is mild and pleasant even in winter. The winds blow constantly throughout the year, driving skippers and surfers out onto the water. The compact rock, with its tough cliffs, thrills the most adventurous climbers. The rough trails, with plenty of hills, put the most audacious bikers to the test. Sport at Garda Trentino: challenge yourself… it’s pure adrenaline!
The winds that blow regular make every day the perfect day for a trip out in a boat. The waves, never overly large, are suited to both expert skippers and beginners. The northern part of Lake Garda is renowned as one of the best Italian regatta locations, and is as good as any of the great international sailing circuits.
Our sailing school is suitable both for kids and adults, from introductory classes to advanced classes in boat handling and in sailboat racing. Great attention is paid to safety, which is assured by an efficient rescue service.
Lake Garda Winds
The village of Torbole lies on the banks of Lake Garda in Italy. The northern side of Lake Garda is reknown for its fantastic wind conditions, created by the surrounding landscape which channels the wind. Torbole lies at the foot of Mount Baldo and near the mouth of the River Sarca. Different types of wind blow on Lake Garda, and Torbole is ideally placed to catch the afternoon Ora wind from the south. The Ora wind develops at midday or early afternoon and lasts until early evening.
More details about lake Garda winds:
Pelèr: permanent wind which blows from the north and lasts 12 hours, extending across most of the lake’s surface and joining or feeding other winds. In good weather it starts blowing from the evening until 10:00 and 11:00 a.m. First it blows in the northern and middle part of the lake; at sunrise and in the summer months it becomes much stronger, extending across the whole surface; offshore it can reach the speed of 12-15 m/s. It usually brings good weather but, if it arises at the wrong time, as it can happen in winter, it brings bad weather
Ora: permanent wind which blows from the south, which usually develops between 12:00 and 1.00 p.m., after the Pelèr drops, until sunset. It is not as violent as the Pelèr and in fact it rarely blows faster than 8-10 m/s. This is the wind that has made the Upper Garda very famous in the sailing world.
Vineza or Vinesa: this wind comes from the south of the lake; it is created by the Bora wind when it reaches Lake Garda coming from the Upper Adriatic Sea. It’s usually a strong wind and brings changing weather within the next 24 hours. It can last the whole day
Balì or Balinot: it comes down from Mount Ballino, situated in the north-western part of Riva. It isn’t very frequent, but in winter you can usually find it after a sudden drop of temperature. It can travel at a speed of 20 m/s and it often causes big waves – bigger than Pelèr’s
Ponale or Ponalot: it comes from the Ponale Valley in the west and blows in the evening and at night and occasionally in the morning. Along the eastern coast it’s not so strong. It joins the Pelèr and can sometimes bring bad weather; in this case it becomes violent and dangerous.
Getting There – Getting to Lake Garda
Lake Garda- Garda Trentino is easy to reach by all most important national and international connections: motorways, railways and airports.
If you wish to reach the Garda trentino by car the motorway A22 (Modena-Brennero) is the fastest way. The exit is “Rovereto- Sud – Lago di Garda nord” 13 kms. from Torbole. Arriving from Brescia you should travel about 80 kms. along the state road 45 bis (West Gardesana) which takes you to Riva del Garda and Torbole; the stretch of the road between Gargnano and Riva has many tunnels and is rather narrow. The East Gardesana (state road 249) is wider and easier to drive, but beware during the tourist season there is often heavy traffic around Lake Garda.
